Fio Lazarte is a native Peruvian who has lived in Jackson since 2007 and has experienced the U.S. immigration journey firsthand. She teaches third grade students at Munger Mountain Elementary, a dual immersion school where classes are taught in English and Spanish. After discovering a love of teaching as a volunteer tutor and Spanish language teacher for adults, Fio joined Teton Literacy Center as part of a team tasked with creating an early literacy program for children from low-income families. She later moved into the role of Family Literacy Manager, and eventually transitioned to the public education system. In addition to her family literacy instructing experience, Fio has served as a Spanish-language volunteer advocate for domestic abuse survivors at the Community Safety Network, a board member for the Doug Coombs Foundation, where she helped to implement an application process to bridge the gap between marginalized Jackson families and the outdoors, and a board member of the Teton County Search and Rescue Foundation, where she participated in a $7.25 million capital campaign to purchase a dedicated rescue helicopter. Fio works hard to be involved with the many local organizations who support minorities in Jackson and, when she’s not teaching or volunteering, can often be found skiing, hiking, or biking in the Tetons.
